Mini sales down
By Andrew Smith (andrew.smith@nqo.com)
Sales of the Cowley-built Mini dropped sharply in August compared with the same month last year.
A total of 11,832 models were delivered to customers, a fall of 15.8 per cent on August 2005, while overall sales for 2006 have also fallen by 7.6 per cent to 128,710.
But bosses at parent firm BMW said the decline in sales was entirely due to the building work and preparations taking place in the plant for the production of the second generation of the Mini, which will be officially launched at the factory by Chancellor Gordon Brown next week.

The plant closed for the first two weeks of August and production of the new car has now started alongside the existing model. The new car is due to go on sale before the end of the year.
Overall BMW group sales rose by 3.8 per cent 889,345 for the period to the end of August.

I do not like the new MINI but I am pleased for the lads in Oxford who build it and the UK suppliers that the car has sold well.

Sales generally dip when a new model is launched, and I hope the new model is a success as the engine will be UK sourced now too.
