Expanding cab firm sticks with TXs
Taxi firm boss Peter Preston (pictured outside the taxi) took delivery of three new black cabs last week – bringing the total he has bought over the past 16 years to 30!
The LTI Vehicles TXIIs, supplied by Liverpool-based dealer Taxifix, boost the fleet of London taxis at ‘All The Fives’ to 12, with an additional 15 driver-owners working under the banner. He also has two Peugeot Euro 7s and an associated minibus business, Ashley Travel.
Peter has stuck doggedly with black cabs since launching his Hackney Carriage business in Skelmersdale in 1989. Even when he has tried other vehicles, he has always come back to the purpose-built taxi.
And he believes both drivers and passengers alike prefer them to any other taxi.
"The safety part of them is very important. If you do have a bump then people inside don’t get hurt and the panels are easy to replace," said Peter.
"Then the recognisability is superb and they give full wheelchair access for the disabled. We have a lot of people who come to us because we can cope with wheelchairs with no problem.
"I have tried other cabs and did not like them. I did not like the reliability, could not get parts and repairs took ages and were more expensive because we weren’t dealing with a taxi specialist.
"The customers and the drivers both seem to prefer them.
"I do have a couple of Peugeot Euros and they are OK but I would say there is no comparison, particularly if anything goes wrong with them, getting the parts is not easy."
Peter, who runs the biggest fleet of Hackney carriages in west Lancashire, bought the new vehicles to replace two ageing Fairways and a TX1. He said mileage was not normally a problem for the LTI Vehicles models – he has just sold a used TX1 which had done more than 300,000 miles without any problem.
