Taxi drivers warned over new emission laws

London taxi drivers are being urged not to get stuck in a jam over new EU pollution laws but to act now to ensure their cab is green enough.

From July, all new Hackney carriages in London will have to meet stricter Euro 3 emissions tests in a bid to reduce vehicle pollution. Older vehicles will then have two years in which to get up to the standard or be forced off the road.

Despite the fast-approaching deadline thousands of drivers have yet to tackle the issue and they are being urged to act now to avoid costly problems in the future.

Drivers in other parts of the country and also being advised to look into the issue now as the London regulations are expected to be quickly rolled out in other areas of the UK.

Matthew Cheyne, Sales and Marketing Director for LTI Vehicles, which makes the iconic black cabs, said: "This is not an issue that is going to go away. It is just around the corner and needs to be tackled now.

"Older vehicles like the TXI and the Fairway will not meet the regulations. The TXII, the latest version of the black cab which has been around for four years now, does.

"It is about protecting residuals so buying a compliant vehicle as soon as possible will mean drivers get the best return on their investment. Both of our main London dealers have quality used vehicle programmes to cushion the blow of this European legislation.

"The new TXIIs now have the improved suspension, giving a better ride for both driver and passenger, and are recognised as being the safest purpose-built, fully-wheelchair-accessible cabs ever."

Trials for conversion kits to make older vehicles Euro 3 compliant are still on-going and results as to effectiveness and reliability have yet to be published.

The TXII was launched in 2002 as a replacement for the TX1, which was first produced in 1997. It includes a raft of additional safety and environmentally-friendly features with extra improvements for passenger and driver comfort.
