New cabs boost Leicester fleet

Taxi drivers in Leicester have given a thumbs-up to the latest version of the iconic London taxi after being given the chance to get behind the wheel of the revamped cab.
Four driver-owners immediately placed orders for new TXIIs – which recently had its suspension redesigned to give a smoother, more comfortable ride for both the passenger and the driver – after taking part in the ride and drive day.

The event was organised by Mann & Overton Birmingham, the official Midlands dealer for Coventry-based LTI Vehicles, manufacturer of the iconic "black" cabs.

It gave Leicester’s cab drivers the chance to see for themselves how the TXII has been improved with a coil spring system on the rear axle helping the latest cabs set new standards for passenger comfort, while changes to the front suspension have improved handling and driver comfort.

"The event was a great success and we had a number of drivers who came down to try the new TXII for themselves," said Bruce Hancock, Sales Director at Mann & Overton Birmingham.

"That directly led to four new sales as the drivers were so impressed with the way the vehicle handled and knew it would be a benefit to their business.

"They are all owner-drivers so their livelihood depends on the quality and reliability of the vehicle and it was obvious to them that a new TXII would be a good investment.

"Whilst there is a review of conditions going on in Leicester at the moment, this shows not all drivers want van conversions."

The TXII is fully-wheelchair-accessible and has the famous 25-foot turning circle which allows it to perform u-turns on tight roads where most other vehicles would have to do a three-point turn.

Driver Ghulam Kadri, of Leicester’s Azoom Taxis, said he decided to go for a new TXII because of its safety and comfort.

"I have had two TX1s in the past and have stuck with LTI Vehicles because I have been very happy with them," he said.

"The new TXII is great. It is a safe and strong vehicle, which were two of the reasons why I bought it. It is comfortable and the turning circle is very useful in the city."
