Black cabs in Dundee go from 0-70 in record time!

The number of London-style taxis in Dundee has roared past the 70 mark from a standing start of zero less than two years ago.

The city now has one of the newest fleets of Hackney carriages in Scotland thanks to a recent boom in drivers turning to the traditional, purpose-built and fully-wheelchair-accessible TXII from LTI Vehicles.

And the trend shows no signs of abating.

Among the drivers who have bought a London taxi in the last couple of years is John Alexander, who switched from a Peugeot E7 to a new TXII.

“I had an E7 for six or seven months and didn’t like it so went for the TXII because of its security and reliability,” said John.

“I had a run in it first of all and once I had done that, I knew that it was the best vehicle for the job. It is built to be a cab and not converted from something else.

“I am very happy with it and the response from customers has been very positive. They like it too.

”When I look at getting a new cab, I will go for another one like this.”

Paton’s of Edinburgh, the region’s main dealer, has supplied the majority of the vehicles.

Jim Wetherstone, of Paton’s of Edinburgh, said: “Once some of the drivers had tried the TXII for themselves, they were sold on it.

“As more appeared on the streets, it got other drivers interested.

“Going from zero TXIIs to 70 in such a short space of time has to be a record!”

The TXII is the latest incarnation of the iconic black cab from Coventry-based LTI Vehicles. It is widely considered to be the most socially-inclusive, purpose-built taxi ever with full wheelchair accessibility, brightly-coloured steps and handles for the visually-impaired, a hearing-induction loop and intercom, and swivel seat to help older passengers get in and out.
