Conders fills more than half new Luton taxi plates with TXIIs

Eleven new London taxis have been sold to drivers in Luton – filling more than half of a new allocation of Hackney carriage plates.

Luton Borough Council issued 20 new Hackney carriage licences to cope with a perceived shortfall in supply of taxis for the town at peak times.

And 11 of the drivers who picked up the new taxi plates have snapped up TXIIs – the latest incarnation of the famous London cab – from Conders, the main LTI Vehicles dealer for the area.

The TXII from the Coventry-based manufacturer is one of the only purpose-built, fully-wheelchair-accessible taxis. The recent introduction of a newly-designed suspension system has received praise from both passengers and drivers alike. Features like the protective screen for the driver, intercom, swivel seats for easier access for the elderly, and additional floor lighting, have ensured that this latest version of a national icon is the safest ever.

Paul Stone, general manager of Peterborough-based Conders, said: "Most of the drivers are familiar with the LTI Vehicles anyway and so were happy to look at the latest model.

"It has been individual drivers who have been impressed and bought the vehicles as they want to maximise the flexibility and earning potential of the taxi they have.

"We have been very pro-active in making vehicles available for the drivers in Luton to test. We are delighted so many have opted to go with a new TXII."

Nine of the new vehicles have already been delivered and are picking up fares on the streets and ranks of Luton.

Matthew Cheyne, Sales and Marketing Director for LTI Vehicles, said: "The fact that more than half of the drivers who got the new Hackney carriage plates in Luton have bought TXIIs goes to show how highly regarded the vehicle is in the industry.

"It is specifically built for the job, has a host of safety features and now gives its smoothest-ever ride.

"We hope the people of Luton and the surrounding area notice the difference that having such tried and tested taxis on the street can make to their journeys."
