Used TXIIs the answer to meet new emissions laws
London taxi drivers needing to meet new emissions laws are being urged to take advantage of special deals on used vehicles that already make the grade.
All vehicles licensed as Hackney carriages in London from August will need to meet stricter Euro III rules on the levels of emissions. From then, older taxis which have the worst emissions – those pre-Euro or Euro 1 standards – will need to be upgraded to meet the standard by the time they present for their annual emissions test.
Cleaner vehicles, those which meet Euro II standards, will have to have been upgraded to Euro III when they present for their annual test between July 2007 and June 2008, or be forced off the road.
Drivers can splash out on several approved conversion kits which will cut emissions from older engines to ensure they meet the new EU anti-pollution law.
But they are being urged to take advantage of a number of deals being offered on used TXII taxis – the latest version of the traditional London taxi which already meets the new limits – to replace aging vehicles with compliant ones at preferential prices.
Mann & Overton, in Holloway Road, north London, and KPM, in Hemming Street, east London, both approved dealers of LTI Vehicles – the manufacturer of the iconic London taxis – are offering special packages on used TXIIs in a bid to help drivers left with an older cab as the deadline looms for the phasing in of the new rules.
Peter Rigden, General Manager at Mann & Overton London, said: "We are now offering 12 months’ free insurance on all used TXII cabs sold to retail owner-drivers.
"The new rules will affect a lot of people and we are doing our best to ensure that drivers can get the best possible deal in order to get a Euro III compliant TXII."
Similarly, the KPM dealership is encouraging drivers to look at used TXIIs which comply with the new rules through an incentive scheme.
Steven McCarthy, Sales Director at of KPM, said: "We are very sympathetic to the upheaval this new directive is bringing to some drivers and the trade in general. However, we believe we have designed a package that will help make the transition as smooth as possible for them.
"This includes a no deposit, low rate finance deal, and total peace of mind, by the way of a three-year warranty, and our very own successful enhanced driveline scheme."
LTI Vehicles headquarters, in Coventry, has been inundated with calls from drivers anxious to find the best way to meet the strict new guidelines.
Matthew Cheyne, Sales and Marketing Director , said: "We would encourage any driver who needs to upgrade because of the new emissions rules to get in touch with their local LTI Vehicles dealer.
"Not only are they providing good offers on brand new TXIIs but also on used vehicles.
"We have a quality approved used vehicle programme in place and will be able to find a cost-effective solution."
London currently has 21,000 Hackney carriages, with around 10,000 of those pre-Euro or Euro1 and 6,000 in the Euro II category.
The new rules initially apply only in London and are an attempt to improve the air quality there, which is said to be among the worst in Europe. However, it is expected that the standard will be rolled out across other major cities in the UK before long.
