Originally founded as the Royal Automobile Club (RAC), the company is now owned by Norwich Union and is more officially called RAC Auto Services Ltd.

Since Norwich Union have taken over a strong push to re-familiarise the brand with the British public has been launched, including entering their own team in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), with the help of the much loved West Surrey Racing (WSR).
