TVR, takes its name from the company founder Trevor Wilkinson and was founded in Blackpool during 1947. His cars, much like any other motoring enthusiasts, were built using the principles of light-weight bodies and powerful engines, to provide excellent handling combined with a great power-to-weight ratio. Whilst the chasis were of TVR's own design, the engines were taken from larger manufacturers, including Ford and Rover.

During the 1990's TVR's development began to include their own in-house V8 engine, which TVR claim "...became the world's first racing engine to be de-tuned and installed in a road car: the TVR Cerbera."

Until the 90's TVR had mostly followed the trend of 'traditional' British sports cars in their design, 2 seater open top motoring, with styling that looks quite tame and rounded, especially by today's standards. The 1980's saw that develop and produce a few 'wedge' designs as was popular with other British counterparts, such as the Triumph TR7.

During the late 90's TVR's reputation became as noted for styling that got as much attention as their amazing performance figures.

Now in the 21st Century, TVR produces some of the most outragously flamboyant aesthetic designs, which have earnt them some well deserved high credit in the performance and supercar motoring world. All of their current range now uses their latest engine, the 'Speed Six', ensuring that everything about today's TVR's is designed and built in-house.

During 2004, TVR was aquired by a very wealthy young Russian entrepreneur Nikolai Smolenski, who has since made headlines with TVR among fears of moving the company back to Russia. Much speculated reports about job losses and moving factories have kept TVR under the media microscope.
2006 has however had plans confirmed that although the current factory will be closing, it will move to all-new state of the art facilities at a new location, although production will be remaining in Blackpool and is not moving to Russia.
